Sound moves a microphone’s diaphragm. In a moving-coil dynamic microphone, that movement carries a coil through a magnetic field and produces an electrical signal. Thinking of it as a speaker operating in reverse is a useful first picture.

How do microphones work? Well, in a nutshell, they are reverse speakers. And a speaker works by taking electricity flowing into a coil with metal wire wrapped around the magnet. And the changing pattern of electricity in the coil creates a magnetic field that pushes against the magnet's field. This dynamic fight of magnetic fields pushing and pulling makes the coil move. That coil is attached to a big flat disc called a diaphragm. When the coil moves, the diaphragm moves too. The moving diaphragm pushes air back and forth into the room and creates sound waves that we can hear. Now, a microphone turns sound waves into an electrical signal by taking the vibrations your voice makes against the microphone's diaphragm, thus moving the attached coil back and forth, creating an electrical current that flows out of the microphone into an amplifier or sound recording device.
