Explainer
An amplifier lets a small signal control a stronger output. The extra energy comes from a power supply, not from creating energy inside the input signal. That is how a microphone signal can help drive a speaker or a small sensor signal can become easier to process.
The key ideas
- Amplifiers increase signal amplitude or power.
- The power supply provides the extra energy.
- Gain does not automatically remove noise.

Ladies and gentlemen, let's talk about amplifiers, a crucial component in the world of electronics. So amplifiers are like the salt and pepper of the electronics world. They bring out the best in signals by boosting their strength and clarity. So historically, amplifiers were made using vacuum tubes, which were the first components used in electronics. Now, although they worked effectively, they were large, cumbersome, and consumed a lot of power. And that's when the transistor came into play and revolutionized the industry. Now if you haven't already, I hope you watched my video on transistors.
But if not, here's a quick refresher. Think of a transistor as a tiny gatekeeper. It regulates the flow of electrical signals and can also amplify signals, which is why amplifiers and transistors are often used in conjunction together. Now the first application of the transistor was actually as an amplifier when researchers at Bell Laboratories in 1947 used the transistor as an amplifier in a telephone system. So how exactly do amplifiers work? Well simply put, they control the flow of electrons and an amplifier takes a small input signal such as the sound from a microphone
and increases its strength to a level that can drive a speaker. This is accomplished by controlling the flow of current through the transistor and adjusting the output so that it is stronger than the input. Now an analogy for this process could be comparing it to turning up the volume on your speakers. Just like adjusting the volume increases the strength of the sound, the amplifier increases the strength of the input signal. So in addition to audio applications, amplifiers are also used in cameras. A camera sensor captures light and converts it into electrical signals.
However, these signals are a bit too weak to be used on their own. That's where the amplifier comes in. It amplifies these signals to a level that can be processed and stored. So in conclusion, amplifiers play a crucial role in improving the strength and clarity of signals in the electronics world. Whether it's for audio or imaging applications, the use of amplifiers ensures that the output signals are of a high quality. So let's go ahead and raise a glass to these silent heroes that bring out the best in our signals.
